Western Kenya

Lake Victoria, rainforest & the unique side of Kenya

  • 11 days
  • 10 nights
  • Private trip for 2–6 people
  • from €2,400 p.p.

Western Kenya reveals a completely different side of the country. This trip takes you through diverse landscapes and regions far away from the classic Kenya routes – from the Kenyan highlands around Iten and the green slopes of Mount Elgon, through mountain forest and tropical rainforest, to Lake Victoria and its remote islands.

From Nairobi, we first travel to Iten, the “Home of Champions”, where we experience the unique running culture of the Kenyan highlands. We then explore the rugged mountain landscape of Mount Elgon and the Kakamega rainforest before continuing to Lake Victoria.

At Lake Victoria, we explore the islands of Rusinga and Mfangano, discover prehistoric rock art and fossils, and learn about the way of life of the Luo and Abasuba.

To conclude the journey, we travel into the green tea highlands around Kericho. Among the extensive tea plantations, we learn more about Kenyan tea production, can pick tea leaves ourselves depending on the season and taste different varieties of tea.

Long drives are also part of this trip. In return, we experience an exceptionally diverse side of Kenya – with highlands, mountains, rainforest, islands and the vast expanse of Lake Victoria.

A journey for anyone who wants to discover Kenya away from the classic safari routes and combine nature, culture and remarkable landscapes.

Why Western Kenya

Most travelers to Kenya primarily associate the country with safari, savannah and its famous national parks. Western Kenya, by contrast, reveals a completely different side of the country.

Here, highlands, mountain forests, tropical rainforest and the vast expanses of Lake Victoria alternate. Instead of major safari experiences, the focus is on nature, history, special places and encounters with the people who live here.

We experience very different regions and ways of life: the unique running culture of Iten, the rugged mountain landscape of Mount Elgon, the exceptional plant and animal life of Kakamega Rainforest and life around Lake Victoria.

There is also plenty to discover culturally. We meet the Luo and Abasuba and experience how closely everyday life around the lake is connected to the water and to life on the small islands of Lake Victoria.
The journey also includes special sites featuring prehistoric rock art and fossil discoveries.

Western Kenya is a journey for explorers.

It brings together different landscapes, cultures and ways of life while taking you far away from the classic Kenya routes.

If you already know Kenya or consciously want to discover a different side of the country, Western Kenya is the right destination for you.

Less classic safari, more nature, remarkable landscapes and genuine insights.

The view out of a cave behind a waterfall into the forest of Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano on the border between Kenya and Uganda and, with its vast caldera, is one of the largest extinct volcanoes in the world.

The Kenyan side is characterized by mountain forest, bamboo zones, moorlands and volcanic rock formations. One of its special features is the deep caves within the volcanic rock, including the famous Kitum Cave, known for elephants searching for mineral-rich rock.

Mount Elgon National Park is home to elephants, buffalo, leopards, various species of antelope and numerous bird species. The region therefore combines volcanic landscapes, mountain forest and an extraordinary diversity of wildlife and plant life.

Kakamega Rainforest

Kakamega Rainforest is one of the last remaining areas of indigenous rainforest in Kenya. It is a remnant of the once much larger Guineo-Congolian rainforest, which formerly extended across large parts of Central Africa.

The year-round humid climate supports an exceptionally high level of biodiversity. The forest is home to numerous species of trees, ferns and orchids, while birds, butterflies, primates and other forest inhabitants live among the dense vegetation.

Kakamega is particularly well known for its bird diversity, including species that occur in only a few forest areas in Kenya. The tropical rainforest therefore provides a striking contrast to the dry and open landscapes that many travelers associate with Kenya.

A single boat on Lake Victoria below a green island

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is one of the most extraordinary places on our journey.

With a surface area of around 69,000 km², it is the second-largest freshwater lake in the world and the largest lake in Africa. Its enormous surface of water shapes both the landscape and the lives of people throughout the region.

Lake Victoria is much more than a lake – it is a habitat, a transport route and an important source of livelihood for the people living along its shores and on its islands.

During our journey, we also explore the islands of Lake Victoria. The small islands, fishing villages and vast expanses of water offer a completely different impression of Kenya from the well-known safari regions.

The lake is home to a diverse range of wildlife. During a boat trip, we may see hippos and numerous water birds and experience the sunset over the water.

Travel support & local guides

We place great importance on personal support – in German and English. From planning and preparation through to the trip itself, we are available to you and remain your personal points of contact.

For individual activities, we work with local English-speaking guides who know their region, the natural environment and the respective activities extremely well. They accompany you on the ground and share their knowledge with you first-hand.

By arrangement and depending on your needs, we can also accompany you personally on selected activities and support you in communicating with the local guides.

If questions arise during the journey or something does not go according to plan, we are there for you and help find a good solution together.

This allows us to combine personal support with the local knowledge and experience of our guides on the ground.

Accommodation & meals

We select accommodation along the route based on location, safety, availability and the best possible level of comfort.

Especially in remote and less-developed regions, the choice of accommodation and restaurants can be limited.
While we can offer more comfortable options in better-developed areas, the possibilities in rural regions and on remote islands are naturally more basic. Depending on the region and accommodation, it may therefore be necessary to share showers and toilets.

We also try to accommodate individual preferences and dietary requirements when it comes to meals. Vegetarian options in remote regions are often particularly limited.
We discuss the available possibilities with the accommodation providers in advance and do our best to find the best possible solution within the options available.

The specific accommodation and meals included are listed in the detailed itinerary.
