    Nairobi → Iten

Long drive into the Kenyan highlands → Kerio Valley → Iten, “Home of Champions”

After breakfast, we set off early towards the west. Today is the longest driving day of the journey.
The route to Iten covers around 320 kilometers, for which we allow approximately 6–7 hours of actual driving time, depending on traffic, road conditions and conditions along the way.

The journey takes us through diverse landscapes, from the Nairobi area across the Rift Valley and up into the Kenyan highlands. We deliberately allow enough time for the journey and keep the day flexible accordingly.

Our destination is Iten, located at around 2,400 meters above sea level and known as the “Home of Champions” – particularly because of its extraordinary importance to Kenyan long-distance running.

After arrival, we check into our accommodation and take the rest of the day at a relaxed pace.
If our arrival time allows, there is an opportunity in the late afternoon to drive to the Iten viewpoint on the edge of the Kerio Valley. From here, we have an impressive view over the valley far below and the vast landscape of the Kenyan highlands.

The day begins early, as Iten comes alive in the morning. On the red dirt roads around the town, numerous Kenyan long-distance runners are already out training.
We experience the unique atmosphere of this world-famous running center and get a sense of why Iten is known as the “Home of Champions”.

Where possible, you can join a local runner for part of a training session.

We then visit Kamariny Stadium, one of the best-known training grounds for Kenyan long-distance runners.

Afterwards, we leave Iten and continue towards Mount Elgon. The landscape gradually changes as we travel from the highlands around the Kerio Valley towards the green, forested slopes of Mount Elgon.

    Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon National Park → Mountain forest → Kitum Cave → Making’eny Cave & waterfall

Today we spend the day at Mount Elgon, exploring the park’s unique mountain forest on foot.

Together with a local guide or ranger, we enter Mount Elgon National Park and take a guided hike through the dense mountain forest. Depending on conditions and the fitness level of the group, we choose a suitable route.

One of the highlights is Kitum Cave, a natural cave inside the mountain. The cave was formed in ancient volcanic rock formations and is particularly known for elephants searching for salt and other minerals, which occasionally venture deep inside the cave.

We then continue to Making’eny Cave, located only a few kilometers from Kitum Cave. Particularly impressive is the waterfall that cascades directly over the entrance to the cave.

Alongside the caves and waterfall, we experience above all the unique landscape of Mount Elgon: the rugged mountain forest, the volcanic surroundings and the tranquillity of this little-visited region. In the afternoon, we leave the national park and spend a relaxed evening at our accommodation.

From the Mount Elgon region, we make a detour to the Chelelemuk Hills, home to the Kakapel Rock Art Site. Prehistoric rock paintings have been preserved beneath a natural rock overhang and are among the important archaeological traces of Western Kenya.

Together with a local guide, we explore the rock art site and learn more about the history of the paintings and the people who left these traces behind.

We then continue towards Kakamega. The landscape changes once again: from the mountainous surroundings of Mount Elgon, we enter the increasingly green and humid region around Kakamega Rainforest.

Dense greenery, huge trees, vines and an extraordinary diversity of plants and animals make the forest a special experience far away from the classic safari areas.

Together with a local guide, we take a hike lasting several hours through the forest. Along the way, we look out for various primates, including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and red-tailed monkeys, as well as numerous bird species, butterflies and other inhabitants of the rainforest.

Not ready to head home yet?

Your journey doesn't have to end in Nairobi.

If you have some extra time in Kenya, we can arrange your onward journey to Diani Beach – for a few relaxing days on the Indian Ocean. Alternatively, you can add a classic safari and discover places such as Amboseli or Tsavo.

Another option is a safari in the Mara Triangle and/or the Maasai Mara National Reserve. For us, the Mara Triangle is a real insider tip. The number of vehicles at wildlife sightings is actively regulated, which often makes it quieter than the more heavily visited areas of the Maasai Mara.

You can also combine both areas – for example, one day in the Triangle and another in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. From the Lake Victoria region, we can either continue straight to the Mara or travel via Kericho first. After your time in the Mara ecosystem, we return to Nairobi.

We are also happy to put together an individual extension tailored to your wishes and the time you have available.
